To mark the 90th anniversary of the iconic Kavanagh Building, one of Buenos Aires’ most important architectural landmarks, we have developed an initiative that celebrates its legacy while bringing its cultural significance into the present.
Part of Buenos Aires Design and Architecture Month (October 2026), Proyecto Kavanagh highlights the building as a historic monument and a continuing source of inspiration for contemporary discussions around architecture, design, and the city.
Rather than a commemorative event, the project works as a curatorial platform. It seeks to reactivate the Kavanagh through a contemporary lens, reintroducing its legacy to new audiences, and positioning it within current conversations on architecture, design, and urban culture. At the same time, it revisits the cultural environment that made the building possible: a modern, ambitious Buenos Aires deeply connected to international ideas and movements.
Proyecto Kavanagh is developed by Díaz Ortiz Ediciones, Arkheion, and Emma Livingston. Bringing together architecture, design, photography, and publishing, the project combines research, cultural production, and public engagement through a carefully considered approach to form, materiality, and narrative.
The initiative is organized around two main components. The first is an editorial program centered on the publication of the inaugural edition of Kavanagh Buenos Aires, Handbook. The second is a curatorial program featuring a design exhibition organized by Arkheion. The exhibition will invite leading Latin American designers to create new works inspired by the architecture, history, and cultural legacy of the Kavanagh from a contemporary perspective.
